How to set up an IMAP email on a mac

Instructions No Comments

Hopefully this should help in setting up your IMAP email accounts on your mac, the steps would be pretty similar on a windows PC too, it is essentially just entering the correct usernames and passwords when promoted.

Step 1. Open up Mac Mail, and go to Mail » Preferences

Step 2. Select the “Accounts” Tab and click the “+” button at the bottom left.

Step 3. Enter the details here, the “Full Name” will what is displayed when you send an email, so if you send an email to bob@domain.com it will show up in his inbox as, in the case “Milkbottle Test” This would normally be your name.

Step 4. You might be asked to verify the security certificate, depending on your hosting will depend if SSL is turned on, this can be turned off, I’m yet to see a real life advantage to having SSL turned. With Mac Mail it turns it on by default. Once the account it set up you can turn these off pretty easily by going to the advanced tab in the account you want to change.

Step 5. This is you incoming server details. “Account Type” will default to POP, but we want to set up an IMAP email account so change this. “Description” will be what your mailbox will be labelled as in Mac Mail. This becomes pretty vital if you have more than one email account on the same computer. It can be whatever you like as long as it distinguishes between the accounts.

Step 6. Simlilar to the incoming Mail Server setting, username and password plus the server name, The Description again can be whatever you want, it sometimes helps to make it account specific esspecially if you have more than one account set up, so maybe for bob@domain.com you might use “Bob outgoing”. This just helps later if you need to change anything. When it is all filled out click “Continue.”

Step 7. If all has gone to plan then click “Create” If for some reason it say something like “failed to connect to the server” then go back and double check you have entered all the field correctly, look for spelling mistakes, it is very easy to enter .com instead of .co.uk, triple check if you have to. If everything is correct and it still isn’t working then there could be a problem with the information you have been given, in which if you are one of my clients, give me a call and we’ll sort you out!

Step 8. You can now close the preferences panel.

Step 9. Time to test it. Send an email to another account and then reply from the other account. Then you know that you can send and receive mail. Your now good to go and enjoy your new email address.

iPhone retouch

News, Random No Comments

We did a photoshoot of a new Mobile phone a couple of months back which we’ll be blooging about soon but it’s still confidential right now. To get the job we wanted to show the client how we could retouch. Me and Tim (Milkbottle Photography) both use iPhones so we thought what the heck let shoot our own phones.

This is the photo pretty much straight out of the camera, we never knew how dirty our phones were!

News No Comments

Hi, welcome to the new home of Milkbottle Designs, we’re really excited about our new site as it is our first ever blog. We have designed and advised about blogging for our clients but never got round to actually blogging ones self.  We thought it’s about time we practice what we preach in more way than you know.

This blog is still in it’s infancy right now so the direction isn’t set in stone. Whilst we decide what to blog about have a look at the websites and printed media we have produced for our clients.
